The desire to improve the exterior of the house and save money on heating has stimulated you to shop at the hardware store and now you want to know how to install plastic windows with your own hands? That's right, because it is very irrational to give huge money to professional builders for what you can do yourself in just a couple of hours.
The technology of installing plastic windows is simple; even a child can cope with it (if you support the construction in the opening). You just need to learn a few basic steps of this process and remember the simple tips of the masters. Now we will look at the typical installation of a plastic window according to GOST, starting with the dismantling of the old frame and ending with the finishing of the slopes and the installation of fittings.
How to get the necessary measurements to order a window?
Suppose you are only going to replace the old and terrible windows with new and heat efficient ones. To do this, you need to correctly measure the window opening, so that you do not have to sit and expand the walls of the house with a chisel and a perforator. The easiest option is to call the master gager, which is provided by many construction companies and sellers of the windows. It is clear that it costs money, even if they do not charge you a penny for it (the amount is already included in the price of the window). The second option is to find a plumber or carpenter with straight arms at the entrance and supply him with 0.5 liters of capital.
In fact, measuring and installing plastic windows with your own hands is a simple matter. First you need to get the exact width and length of the window opening without taking into account garbage (wooden frame, plaster, dirt). According to GOST, we need to leave 20 mm for thermal insulation around the perimeter of the window construction , an additional 35 mm should be left for the window sill . That is, we measure the width and height of the opening and tilt it to 50 mm - this will result in the necessary parameters of the new window.
There is still such a miracle of construction as windows and quarters. What it is? A window with a small protrusion that increases the heat loss around the perimeter of the window. Most often, such miracles can be found in houses made of foam concrete. Here we measure everything at the narrowest point and add 30 mm to the width of the window when ordering.
The technology of installation of windows implies fixing the frame not in the center, but with a recess 30% of the width of the wall deep (look outside the house). In fact, you can shift anywhere. Here the main thing is to take into account the width of the future window sill and the tide, because you can put it so that the tide will be on the whole window, and inside there is even nowhere to put a vase. Fastening plastic windows according to GOST requires adding another 50 mm to the width of the window sill and the ebb, but here it all depends on the features of your home. Please note: the radiator should be closed only half.
Tip: note that when installing the window sill and the ebb will go under the window for about 3 centimeters, as well as 4 cm into the walls, so it is better to buy them with a margin of at least 70 mm and make it a little wider. You can always shorten on the spot, there is not a large overpayment, but to do something longer will not work.
Dismantling of old windows with frame and preparation for work
You measured the opening, bought all the necessary materials and are ready to install, but you face one small problem that needs to be fixed with a hacksaw and a hammer taiga hatchet - frame. There are 2 options for its removal - loyal and interesting. The first involves prolonged loosening, cutting and removing the frame with a hacksaw, nail puller or mount. The second method involves active work with an ax or hammer.
Next, you need to remove the mounting foam, insulation, cement and other construction wonders that were used to fix the old window. Do not interfere with the vacuum cleaner, because the installation of windows with their own hands requires cleanliness for better adhesion of materials. You can blow out the compressor dust or immediately go washing, if there is such an opportunity.
Tip: mounting foam is much better attached to a wet surface, so heat losses will be much less after it hardens. It penetrates the structure of the material and does not interact with the dust layer that covers the concrete or brick foundation.
Of course, a great advantage would be a moderately neat knocking of a window so that the supporting structure would not be damaged. The smoother the window opening, the easier it will be for you to align everything and fix it.
Step by step instructions for installing plastic windows in a brick house
You don’t have to tear your back - call 1 ancillary worker who will help lift this difficult construction and support it while you are doing all the necessary operations with the frame and double-glazed windows. Do not remove the protective film from the window until the installation is completed . If there are doors, they can be removed, it will be easier, and then put them on, after setting the frame on the level. Now we will consider step by step installation of a plastic window.
STEP 1: install the wooden bars below and on the sides. Using a hacksaw, cut wood rectangles 20 mm high and 5 centimeters long (dimensions can be slightly larger, depending on the desired clearance). It will be desirable to fix the bars (glue, foam) so that they all do not fall out until you place the window in the opening.
Important: wedges and bars should be installed near future anchors. Thus, you can avoid frame deflection when installing plastic windows with your own hands, since it is almost impossible to measure tool pressure and tightening. You can screw the anchor or screw right through the wooden block, but no further than 30 cm from it.
STEP 2: Insert the frame into the opening. First, simply put on the bars, then adjust and move the wedges until the entire structure is level. Measure it not only horizontally along the sill, but also vertically with a plumb along the slopes.
STEP 3: make markup for anchors or screws. Through the holes in the frame of the window it is necessary to stick out the carnation and draw a label. Next, take a drill and make holes around the perimeter of the window at the locations of marks, drill directly through the frame or you can remove it for convenience - at your discretion.
STEP 4: installation of plastic windows according to GOST. We install the frame into place, measure technological indents of 20 mm, according to the building codes, then “bait” the anchor, without much delaying them. If you want to use anchor plates, then you just need to bend them so that they touch the window. If the fastener protrudes above the plastic 1 mm - this is the optimal tightening. You can twist a little more to be flush with the surface. Check all the level after screwing, release or tighten the sides according to the meter reading.
Correction: the manual installation of plastic windows with their own hands is slightly different from the above, if you have a wooden house. Several operations are automatically eliminated, since the fastening is carried out with ordinary long screws, which are screwed through the frame into wooden bars or logs. But it is necessary to tighten them with a small effort and evenly along the entire perimeter of the frame, so that it does not deform anywhere.
STEP 5: blow out all the mounting foam. Before installing plastic window sills, it is necessary to pour foam around the perimeter of the window, not sparing the material (you can cut off the excess later). Make sure that it does not fall on the window - it is difficult to wash. Wait 30 minutes and get a windowsill under the window to a depth of 25 mm. You can make a minimum bias, say, 3 degrees. Under the window sill blow foam over its entire area so that there are no voids.
IMPORTANT: make in advance wall grooves or grooves for the window sill and learn that it is needed 8 centimeters longer than the window opening (it will go 25 mm under the window and somewhere 4 centimeters into the wall on the right and left).
At this step, the installation of plastic window sills ends, now it is necessary to put 4 cans of cucumbers evenly throughout the window sill (so that it will freeze) and let the window rest for 3 days from you, so that the foam will finally harden. You can put 3 bricks, without a difference, the main thing is to apply pressure from 10 kg and more. At an air temperature of +25 hardening will take 40 hours, if it is cold and wet, then you should wait a little longer.
Do-it-yourself installation of ebbs and slopes on plastic windows
Fix the ebb is very simple. We calculate its dimensions in the same way as on the window sill; the only difference is a large slope from the window, so that the water does not linger and disappears immediately after being hit. Fasteners can be made with foam or with standard screws, the reflux is screwed to the support profile (the one on which the entire window is located). The installation of the reflux with your own hands can be considered finished, nothing more is needed there, except to glue the gap between the reflux and the plastic with silicone at will.
Now smoothly go to the slopes. They should be beautiful and heat-efficient, so we (and not only we) recommend using sandwich panels for this matter (you can use drywall - it is cheaper). If you think that it’s very hard to install a slope on a plastic window with your own hands, then you are mistaken. We take Scotch tape and foam. Blow out the entire sidewall or top with foam, lean the slope and glue the sandwich panel to the wall with adhesive tape . Cover the seam between the window and the panel with silicone or another miracle device that prevents heat loss and does not let moisture through.
Now it remains to do the installation of fittings and blinds on the plastic windows with your own hands and you can begin to use the design after 30 hours. It is necessary to wait until the mounting foam is polymerized and will not deform the sandwich panel and other elements of the plastic window.
And according to tradition, we offer to watch a good video installation of the window with your own hands, it describes in detail the process and clearly shows all the fasteners:
